Did your chronic illness insist that you spend your vacation in bed?

Before fibromyalgia, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and other chronic illnesses took over my body, I would return home from a vacation feeling relaxed or energized.

At first, my illnesses would require a little more rest while away. Because I pushed through pain and fatigue in hopes of keeping up with my family, I always returned home feeling like death.  It was not unusual for my body to need days, weeks, and a few times months to recover from a week away from home.

Through the years I have not only made changes to how I address and relieve my chronic pain, but I have made changes to how I vacation too!

I will be the first to admit that I don’t have the patience of a saint. Truth is that I am quite impatient, especially when it comes to allowing my body time to heal from an injury or flare.

Bed Rest Just Got Better

If I have learned anything in my 20 years of living with multiple chronic illnesses such as psoriatic disease, fibromyalgia, endometriosis, and degenerative disc disease to name a few it is that comfort is a necessity when riding out a flare. Not just flares, but also when prescribed bed rest after an injury or surgery.

After being diagnosed with multiple broken ribs and being prescribed six weeks of bed rest, I wasted no time finding and purchasing products that would provide comfort during my recovery period.

Tips that will make going to the movies with chronic pain enjoyable again!

Before chronic pain from fibromyalgia, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, degenerative disc disease, coccydynia, and endometriosis took over my life, I used to go to the movie theater at least once a week.

As my pain increased and other painful health issues were added to my collection of diagnoses, my love for spending the afternoon watching movies at a theater turned into loathing.

I gave up.

Instead of getting excited for the release of a new movie, I dreaded having to avoid spoilers while waiting for it to stream on Netflix or Hulu.

Then a few years ago, I realized that although going to the theater every weekend might not be possible, I could still go and enjoy the movies I was most passionate about.  All I had to do was let go of my pride, get creative, and find solutions to what was making it such a torturous event.

I may have broken ribs, but I was NOT about to allow them to keep me from seeing Avengers: Endgame in theaters.

I could have tried avoiding spoilers and waited a few weeks until I felt better, but I didn’t want to.

Instead, I assessed my needs and came up with a plan that allowed me to go and make it through the movie without too much additional pain.

What happens when I live my old life

I received my cluster of diagnoses during the early 2000’s.  During that time not one doctor urged, nudged, or hinted to me that I needed to make changes to how I lived my life.  Not ONE!!!

Instead of issuing warnings or advice to improve the quality of my life, my doctors insisted that they would be able to find the right pill(s) to offset my symptoms and pain.  Of course everything they tried failed.  Click here if you would like to take a peek at the pain management plan that finally helped reduce the pain I experience from fibromyalgia, psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis, degenerative disc disease, coccydynia, and abdominal adhesions from endometriosis and surgical scarring.

Between the false hope my doctors were issuing and the pressure from friends and family to get better, making changes to how I lived never crossed my mind.  But it should have and here is why:

When I live my old life:

  • I ignore the needs of my body/chronic illnesses
  • I injure myself more often
  • I spend more time in bed than actually living my life
  • My family loses precious time with me
  • I spend more time and money seeing doctors and visiting emergency rooms
  • I took no responsibility towards reducing my pain.  I trusted and followed everything my doctors said.

Why changes had to be made

  • The longer I ignored the needs of my body/illnesses, the sicker I became and more damage was done to my body
  • Refusing to accept the need to use a mobility aid created more opportunities to fall, which I did often.  Each fall resulted with either a broken bone or blood clot.
  • I was killing myself
  • My family needed me
  • I would rather take my family to Disneyland, then to spend money and time in the emergency room over an injury that could have been prevented had I listened to my body, done things differently, or utilized a mobility aid.
  • I had to take responsibility and to accept that my doctor may never be able to help me.

 

Changes that literally changed my chronic life

  • I made friends with my diseases.  I got to know them and my body so well that I after awhile I could feel the beginning stages of a flare coming on.  In the past, I just pushed until I collapsed.
  • Using mobility aids may have been hard to accept on an emotional level, but when I look back and see how little I have fallen since I began using them, I know I made the right decision.
  • By recognizing and addressing signs of a flare or physical distress I am able to avoid complications like my body mimicking a stroke or muscles freezing to the point of feeling rock hard for months on end.
  • Spending the amount of time that I do in caring for my body, doing things differently, accepting what I can’t do, and letting go of unrealistic expectations has gifted me with less time in bed and more out making memories with my family.
  • I took responsibility and charge over my care.  I researched and tried alternative treatments. While I may spend more money on those treatments than any pill that my insurance would cover, I save by not having to visit my doctor for a refill every month and not visiting the emergency room throughout the year. All of these changes, plus others that you can read about in my eBook Make Pain Your Bitch: How to Dominate Your Chronic Life, has restored my independence.  Going grocery shopping no longer makes me anxious, because I can finally do it without needing a day or two to recuperate.  I can drive and clean my house again.

Now I am not saying that everyone who reads my book and follows my pain management plan will have the same results.  The changes you need to make may differ, but no matter what, any change that involves listening to and respecting your body/disease is going to improve your life.

Don’t make the mistake I did by waiting 12 years before even accepting that there was no way I could go on living like I used to.

Living our old lives doesn’t make us strong, instead it makes us weaker.

Living our old lives does more than increase our physical pain, it hurts us and our loved ones emotionally too.

Are you still living your old life? 

Whether you are or not, I challenge you to examine your day to day life and pick one area/task that could be done differently, in a way that won’t increase your pain level.  Then make that change.  You don’t have to change every aspect of your life immediately, take your time and make your changes one step at a time.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Life can be tough, but so are you!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Life with one or more chronic illnesses is tough.

Life with chronic pain is tough.

Life, whether you are chronically ill or not, is tough.

But I have news for you! You are tougher!!!!

Yes, that is right.  I know that there are times when you don’t feel tough.  I also know that there are days when you truly lack physical strength, but that doesn’t mean that you aren’t tough.

As long as you are fighting for your life, looking for ways to improve it, finding joy in every day, and not giving up, YOU ARE TOUGHER THAN YOUR ILLNESS OR CHRONIC PAIN!

I know that taking a nap may feel like your illness has won, but it isn’t true.  You win when you acknowledge that your body needs to rest.  It takes guts to do what your body demands of you, instead of forcing your body to follow your desires.  It takes immense strength to go to physical therapy, to keep trying new treatments, to change your lifestyle, to make healthier choices, and most importantly accept that all these things must be done in order for you to remain strong enough to survive.

Here are three  examples to help you build and maintain the emotional strength that is necessary for living with a chronic illness or pain.

Number One: Spend more time with people who lift you up and less with those who bring you down.

Those who constantly remind you of your limitations or are always bringing up your shortcomings, are only going to weaken you.  People who point out your strengths, help you find alternative ways to do things, or just cheer you on when you try something new will build your confidence.  Who are you spending most of your time talking to?

My life isn’t filled with people who understood how difficult living with fibromyalgia, psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis, endometriosis and its fallout, degenerative disc disease, and coccydynia is.  The difference between my life then and now is that I choose not to spend much time with those whose favorite word is CAN’T.  The more I hear that I can’t do something, the more I believe that I can’t do anything.  I may not be able to do everything the way I used to, but I CAN find new ways to do what I want.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Number Two: Seek counseling

I am not talking about joining a social media support group.  Those are okay to meet other people who “get” it, but not for truly dealing with your fears and life choices.  Nor is it fair to expect your family or spouse to be the ones to counsel you.  There are many options available for counseling depending upon your needs.

Number Three: Start envisioning your future WITH your chronic illness.

I know that you are hoping and praying for a cure. I am too…. But the reality is that our chronic illnesses are most likely going to be with us for the rest of our lives, especially for those of us over 50. If your chronic illness isn’t included in all of your future dreams and plans, your future will be filled with disappointment. Not only that you, but you will be unprepared for the hard times that await you. Sorry to sound like a Debbie downer, but living with your head in the clouds waiting for life to magically be transformed will only lead to more heartbreak.

When you envision a future that includes your chronic illness, you aren’t giving up. Instead you will grow stronger because your mind will be focused on figuring out what you will be able to do, making alternative plans, or finding a different way to do what you had originally planned for. Will things go wrong? Of course they will! Do you know anyone who hasn’t had anything go wrong in their life? I don’t! The difference is that you will be better prepared.

I know you are tough, because if you weren’t you wouldn’t be reading this blog post. If you are feeling like you are stuck in your life, take a deep breath, assess your situation, make plans to move forward, and never forget that you are a warrior!
