Fighting the white coats

countdown 11 white coats.png

I feel like I have been at war with white coats (doctors) for my entire adult life. Some of the battles were minor in comparison to the ones that put my life at risk, but nonetheless, each and every one of them drained me both physically and emotionally. Oh let’s not forget about how they drained my bank account. Second, third, and twenty first opinions aren’t free! Neither are the repeat testing that the new doc orders just because he doesn’t want to accept or look at the results from the prior tests.

My first battle lasted 8 long years. I had loose cartilage in my knee that would jam into the joint. When this happened, I couldn’t put pressure on it. Yet with each ER and doctor visit I was told to rest until the pain went away, then to exercise and lose 10lbs!!!! Knowing that I would be told to stay off it until the pain subsided each time, I ended buying my own crutches. It was easier and less expensive than having to continue renting them from the pharmacy. Finally after falling down a flight of stairs a doctor took my complaint seriously and it was later fixed with surgery.

book cover web

My luck appeared to change soon after my knee surgery. When I went to my OBGYN with complaints of severe pain with every other cycle, he quickly scheduled an exploratory surgery when tests weren’t conclusive. And thank God he did, because I had a massive cyst that had adhered not only to my left ovary, but also to my fallopian tube, uterus, and bladder. To top it off it was also adhered to my sidewall and was pulling all of those organs to it as well. In fact my fallopian tube and uterus also had to be released from the sidewall. A year later a visit to the ER while on vacation resulted in an emergency appendectomy and later when the pain I had prior to the exploratory surgery returned my OBGYN scheduled a hysterectomy.

At this point I fell into a false sense of security. I truly believed that doctors listened and would do whatever possible to help their patients. That was until the pain that triggered the exploratory surgery returned after my hysterectomy. From that point I was told that it was all in my head. One doctor who prior to my hysterectomy told me that he didn’t believe that fibromyalgia was a real disease, later blamed my pain on it. Throughout a two year period I saw 21 doctors before finding one who would take my pain seriously. The others either blamed my chronic illnesses or told me that they would be happy to refer me to a psychologist.

To be honest, I did reach a point where I began believing that maybe I was losing my mind. If it hadn’t been for the mess that was finally revealed in surgery, I probably would have had lost it. Later I would continue to battle adhesions. They became an ongoing problem even after all the endometriosis was removed. Little did I know that this battle would later give me the strength to once again fight for my life.

Surgical scarring continued the spread. They would adhere to my organs and abdominal lining. Then they would rip from them and create more scar tissue. Until 2 years ago I believed and was told by my doctors that the only way to deal with them was thru surgery. But because I had had so many abdominal surgeries (8 by the last time they were strangling my bowels) I couldn’t find a surgeon willing to perform my 9th abdominal surgery.

At the time I felt as though I had been issued my death sentence. They gave no other options other than being offered the equivalent of end of life pain care. Not ready to give up, I continued my quest to find a solution. When I heard that ultrasound therapy had been known to break up adhesions, I quickly asked my physicians if we could give it a try. But my HMO quickly denied it, saying it wasn’t a common practice within their network and they would not pursue or cover it.

OSKA TRY Save $55 with code DIVA

Thankfully I soon discovered pemf therapy. By running treatments on my abdomen, I was able to relieve the pain that my doctors swore nothing could be done for! Within days my pain went from excruciating to mild. Within weeks it was completely gone!

I wouldn’t be here today had I not fought the white coats. I would be dead or unable to function from severe abdominal pain had I believed them when they said nothing more could be done.

The white coats have failed me. Seeing how many people aren’t able to achieve a decent level of pain relief, I’d say they’re failing them too.

I don’t gush about pemf therapy because I’m an affiliate with Oska Wellness. I can’t stop talking about it because it literally saved my life. I’m an affiliate with them because I’m able pass on a savings of $55 when my promo code DIVA is entered at checkout.

It’s a good thing that I’m stubborn. Otherwise I wouldn’t be here to celebrate my 50th birthday. Learn from my experience! Never give up and don’t be afraid to look outside or in my case inside the box!

5 Best Practices for Safe Walking

5 Best Practices for Safe Walking featured

If you would have told me two years ago that I would be writing about walking, I would have laughed until I cried…… But that is exactly what I am doing!  Two years ago I was thrilled to be able to walk through the grocery store, walking for exercise or fun wasn’t on my radar yet.  But that isn’t what today’s post is about, click here to find out how I went from barely moving to running circles around my family and friends, today I am going to share to stay safe while walking.

*Disclosure: This post includes affiliate links. Meaning that at no additional cost to you, I receive a commission when you make a purchase through my links. The proceeds earned fund the giveaways I host in The Disabled Diva’s Fitness Buddies and Disneyability Group on Facebook.

1. Be aware!

This practice covers several areas.  The first being preventing personal attacks.  Try to walk in daylight hours or on well lit streets.  I recommend carrying mace/pepper spray, a stun gun, or at the very least a rape whistle/alarm.  Know your route and identify possible escape routes by pulling up and studying the area on Google Maps.
Shady people aren’t the only things you need to be on alert for.  As I learned two weeks ago, pinecones are evil! Seriously though, watch for debris on your walking path. While you may not have much of a chance of slipping on a banana peel, your odds of tripping on uneven pavement, rocks, pinecones, bottles, cans, trash, leaves are high.  When walking at night use a flashlight to see hazards before you step on them!

2. Make yourself visible

If you are walking between dusk and dawn, you need to make sure that people are going to see you.  I don’t care how much or little traffic your walking route experiences, all it takes is for one driver not to see you and boom! So do yourself and those that love you a favor and dress in bright neon or white clothing.  Not willing to give up your dark workout clothing? Then wear a reflective vest or arm/ankle bands.

3. Go inside!

When the air quality is less than desirable or if the streets/sidewalks are wet or icy, walk indoors!  You don’t have to join a gym or purchase a treadmill, you can walk your local mall for free!  Other options, although you won’t be able to walk fast, are to visit a local museum, art gallery, or indoor flea market.  If weather conditions make it unsafe to drive, walk in your house! Walk in place on a mini trampoline, in front of your TV, or just walk from room to room.  Best part of walking at home is knowing that if you get too tired you can sit down and rest.
no excuses.png

Mini Trampolines and Treadmills make working out at home a breeze!

4. Make it a group activity

If possible, get yourself a walking buddy! You could get together with a group of friends or neighbors and turn your exercise time into a fitness happy hour! If you must walk alone, bring your dog. They are great at fending off strangers. Even small neurotic chihuahuas provide protection. Don’t have a dog? Ask to walk your neighbor’s. Having someone else to be accountable to will get you out the door regularly.  Walking with someone always motivates me to push harder than if no one was watching.

5. Track your steps

If you are like me, you may have a tendency to overromanticize your physical accomplishments if you don’t have proof of what you did staring you in the face.  There have been times when I thought I racked up thousands and thousands of steps, only to later discover that I barely accomplished a small percentage of what I thought I had.  Tracking steps makes you aware of what you are really capable of.  When dealing with chronic pain, this knowledge can help you plan future outings.  If an event is going to require more walking than you typically do in a day, you will know whether to cancel or bring along a mobility aid.  When you track your steps and chronic pain, you will find a range that will become a warning for you to stop before running yourself into the ground.  This will decrease the number of days you spend recovering from pushing yourself too hard.

Migraines Suck Less With PEMF

Migraine Relief Without a Prescription

If you suffer from migraines you have most likely treated them with a prescription or over the counter medication.  That is how I used to treat my migraines, that is until I was introduced to a fabulous drug-free pain relief device that changed not just how I treated them, but how they impacted my life.

How I used to ride out a migraine

The picture above is how I used to ride out a migraine. The picture below this paragraph is how I get through them now.  What’s the difference?  The difference is in how I treat migraines.

oska migraine blank

First migraine in over 8 months and I was not sentenced to bed.

In the beginning

I began experiencing debilitating migraines early on in my chronic life.  However, they weren’t frequent and weren’t as disruptive to my life as my other chronic illnesses were until 2011.  At that time they began occurring on a weekly basis.  The pain was so intense that I couldn’t open my eyes if my life had depended on it.  Over the counter migraine medication would knock me out for hours, if not for the entire day.  I would need days to recover from each episode and the meds always left me feeling groggy.

A new way of living

After trying medical marijuana in 2012, I knew that I no longer wanted to treat any of my chronic illnesses with pharmaceutical medication unless absolutely necessary.  After fully detoxing from my medications, I began treating all of my symptoms and pains with cannabis.  Immediately, the number of migraines I experienced decreased dramatically.  From that point on, the only time I suffered from one was when an extreme heatwave or a storm front would push through.  Thankfully we don’t experience either one too often here in southern California.  While no longer losing a few days of my life every week or month, I would still lose 2-3 days every time a major weather disturbance hit.  Having them occur less often wasn’t the only perk, the intensity of my migraines began to lessen as well.

Meeting my pain relief soul mate

In December of 2016, I was asked to try PEMF therapy with Oska Pulse.  PEMF therapy uses pulsed electromagnetic fields to reduce pain and inflammation without dangerous drugs or side effects.  While skeptical, I gave it a try.  To my surprise, it worked!!! At first, I used it to treat inflammation in my joints.  After a few months, I began using it full time to relieve abdominal pain caused by adhesions (the result of endometriosis and surgical scarring).  As you can read in my series (click here to read), Oska Pulse also relieved pain in my feet and sacrum from psoriatic arthritis.  But something even more amazing happened after more months of use, I began experiencing fewer weather-related migraines and after a year of continuous use, the most I would get knocked down for was one day! Today marks 17 months since I began using this drug-free pain relief device daily.  My current migraine is the first that I have had in over 8 months! Other than a 60-minute nap, I have not been confined to my bed.  I may not have the energy to go to the beach or Disneyland, but I have been able to sit and work at my desk each day.

If your migraines are keeping you in bed or causing you to lose days and weeks of your life, I encourage you to research PEMF therapy and see if it might help you. Click here to read third party reports about PEMF therapy and migraine relief.

Make Pain Your Bitch: How to Dominate Your Chronic Life

chronic pain lies, it says you can't, won't, and never will .. but you can, will, and should try

Make Pain Your Bitch

Has your chronic illness stolen the life you had?

Have you put your dreams on hold?

Does having to spend days, weeks, or months recovering from an outing make you feel like a prisoner in your own home/body?

Do you want to take your life back?

What are you waiting for?

In my eBook Make Pain Your Bitch: How to Dominate Your Chronic Life  I share the areas of my life that I needed to take ownership over and the changes that had to be made.  My book won’t cure you, in fact it won’t change your life….. But it will motivate you to change it yourself by helping you recognize what changes you need to make and empowering you to make them.

I haven’t been healed. Fibromyalgia, psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis, degenerative disc disease, and endometriosis are NOT curable.  However, what I am able to do has increased since applying the changes I outline in the book.

I didn’t need a cure or achieve major pain relief to improve my life.  Yet by changing my ways, I was able to significantly reduce the amount of chronic pain I experience daily.

Chronic illnesses are not death sentences.  There is hope and it is possible to live a fulfilling and pleasurable life with or without less pain.  I have learned to live passionately and purposefully no matter what my body throws at me.  I have learned to work with my diseases and make adjustments when necessary, instead of constantly battling them.

bio pill

BioCBD+ products are out of this world!

My Recommendation: This is an amazing CBD capsule.  Due to their water soluble formulation each 10mg capsule is the equivalent of 50mgs!  Because of its strength I was not able to use this product during the day.  Instead I found it to be the perfect way to prepare for bed.  Within an hour or two of taking one 10mg capsule my muscles would completely relax, my mind would clear, and my pain level decreased.  This made it  easier to fall asleep and helped me sleep deeper and longer, without feeling hungover the next morning. I was also able to decrease how much THC I take for pain. Because these capsules are so powerful, I find that I don’t need that high of a dosage every night. When used for multiple nights I would find myself feeling sluggish during the day. Since I experience a level of relief in my joints and muscles from this product for a day or two afterwards,  I prefer to use this product two or three times a week and substitute a lower dosage of another brand in between.

Everyone has a different experience.  I shared this bottle with two other friends.  One was like me and only used it at night.  The other who has severe anxiety felt completely balanced and alert when she used it during the day.

Tips For Treating Your Chronic Pain or Illness With PEMF Therapy on The Go and at Home

Tips For Treating Your Chronic Pain or Illness With PEMF Therapy on The Go and at Home

This is a sponsored post.  Although I am an affiliate for Oska Wellness, all thoughts, views, opinions, and experiences are my own and were in no way influenced by the company. See full disclosure at the bottom of the article.

Do you know what I love most about treating my chronic pain and illnesses with PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic fields) therapy, that is besides seeing daily improvements?  It’s being able to treat them at home and on the go.  That’s right! I am not spending hours per day, week, or month sitting in a doctors office, I am treating them at home, Disneyland, the beach, grocery store, and even at Dodgers Stadium!  Instead of using up my energy by having to go to the doctors, that energy is now spent doing what I want with the people I love.

While there are several portable PEMF devices available, my favorite is Oska Pulse.  The first reason is affordability.  Oska Pulse is the lowest priced unit that I have found in my research. The second reason I love my Oska Pulse is that it comes with a strap that makes it easy to treat the areas I need to no matter where I am at.

Here are some tips for treating specific pain areas while on the go or at home:

1. Knee pain

With the handy strap that comes with Oska Pulse, I am able to address swelling, inflammation, and pain in my knees anytime and anywhere. The picture above was taken Friday evening at Dodgers Stadium.  After treating my conditions daily with PEMF therapy I was able to attend the game without using a mobility aid!!  That was the first time in over a decade that I have been able to go out like I used to!! I take my device everywhere I go because I never know when my knee will decide to act up.  Climbing three staircases is what angered my knee on this evening.  Instead of worrying if I would be able to walk back to the car or even to the restroom, I strapped my device under my knee and was good to go after a few treatments.  Best part was getting to laugh with friends and watch the game all while treating my knee.  When it comes to knee pain, where I place it depends on where I feel the most swelling.  Sometimes I place it above and other times under.

2. Neck pain

Once again that handy dandy strap comes into play.  I either strap it to a neck pillow, wear the strap like a sash or wrap it around the back of my chair.  Click here for more tips on using Oska Pulse for neck pain.  It doesn’t matter if I am in the car, pushing a shopping cart, or having my picture taken with Mickey Mouse, I am able to treat my neck anywhere!

3. Lower back, abdomen and pelvic pain, and hips

Oska Pulse works within a 22 inch radius.  Click here to see a demonstration.  This makes it possible to treat all of these areas at the same time.  Trust me I was blown away the day I realized that while I was focusing my treatment on my abdominal adhesions by placing it around my waist, it was also treating my hips, pelvis, and lower back.  The strap makes it easy for me to move the device to the area that is bothering me the most whether I am watching a parade at Disneyland or dusting off the fireplace mantel at home.  Don’t want to wear it?  Place the device in your purse or pocket, the treatment will remain the same.  Click here for more tips on treating lower back pain with Oska Pulse.

No matter what area of your body or condition you are seeking to treat with PEMF it important to keep two things in mind.  First, you must commit to using it daily.  Once a day is not enough.  It is recommended to begin your daily treatments with a minimum of 10 treatments per day.  This is easy since you don’t have to stop living in order to treat your conditions.  Each treatment lasts 30 minutes.  If you find yourself forgetting to turn the device back on, I recommend setting a timer on your phone to remind yourself.  The second thing you must remember is that Rome wasn’t built in a day, so don’t expect to feel better after one treatment or even one full day of treatment.  You must be patient.  While I experienced immediate results in regards to my abdominal adhesions, it took over two months before I noticed a significant difference with my lower back pain from degenerative disc disease and psoriatic arthritis. Results vary depending upon how often you use it and if you are addressing your pain points.  I run my device all day, every day and move it around to focus on each of my pain points.
