Countdown to 50: #7 Trying Something New

countdown 7

As I explained in my prior post, after moving to California  I had hit some road blocks.  These barriers put not just a wrinkle in my pain management plan, they completely destroyed it.  Until this point, I had not been open to trying anything different.  It wasn’t that I didn’t want to improve, I just didn’t believe improvement of any kind was possible.  If it were, wouldn’t my doctors had suggested or given it to me?  Today I am going to share how my road blocks led me to try new things and how doing so made my dreams come true!

The first new thing I tried was to embrace and utilize mobility aids.  As long as I had someone to push my wheelchair, I could go anywhere! True I still needed the energy to sit up and be out of bed for the day, but I was getting out more than had I relied on my body for transportation.

With mobility covered, I needed to reduce my pain and inflammation levels. I also was in desperate need of sleep.  Painsomnia is no joke and at that time was something I suffered from it not just at night, but 24/7.  This led to trying something that I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to try, but with no other options I decided to take the plunge and got my California medical marijuana recommendation.  It was the best decision of my life……

Cannabis, made it possible to sleep, it reduced my pain and inflammation.  But it did something else that I hadn’t expected.  It reduced how often I experienced anxiety attacks and when I would have one they were never as severe as they were before.  I was no longer depressed.  It is amazing how much living with less pain can impact your life!!! Later CBD would help me quit smoking! I have tried and failed numerous times, but now I really am a non-smoker!

Seeing how much marijuana was able to do for me, I wondered what other natural and alternative treatments or therapies would help?  I began tweaking my diet and discovered foods that were triggering inflammation.  Funny thing is the items that I had to remove would have never been discovered by following any particular “diet” as there were items from every single one that were trouble makers.

The next thing I tried was PEMF therapy with Oska Pulse.  To be completely honest, I had absolutely no faith that this electronic device could deliver on its promise to reduce pain and inflammation.  In fact, I really tried it in order to prove them wrong!!!  But it was I who was wrong!!! That beautiful blue glowing device really did work!!!! It worked so well that I was able to begin exercising!!!! Within months of daily use, pain that had plagued me for years, pain that my doctors said would only get worse, pain that made me want to die, was gone!  Click here to read about all the ways PEMF therapy has improved my health and lifeClick here to visit my friends at Oska Wellness to see for yourself what others have to say, there is also a video of me…..  But most importantly, don’t forget that my promo code DIVA will save you $55.  Not sure if Oska Pulse is the PEMF device you want to go with?  Click here to see what other products are available.

Trying new things can be terrifying.  But it can also be the best thing you ever do!  My dreams of not needing a wheelchair at Disneyland or being able to go for long walks at the beach would have never come true had I not tried something new.

Cannabis is the devil’s lettuce and other reasons people give for not trying it for chronic pain relief

cannabis is the devil's lettuce instagram

It is hard to believe that in this day and age where cannabis has been legalized not just for medicinal use, but in several states for recreational usage too, there are still people dead set against trying it to reduce chronic pain.  Yet every day I hear someone say that they would never try it and below are some of the excuses they give.

*Disclosure: I am not a medical professional and am not issuing medical advice. This post includes affiliate links. Meaning that at no additional cost to you, I receive a commission when you make a purchase through my links. The proceeds earned fund the giveaways I host in The Disabled Diva’s Fitness Buddies and Disneyability Group on Facebook.

It’s the devil’s lettuce!

Some people believe that marijuana is the work of the devil.  If you believe in the devil, it only makes sense that you believe in God too.  If that is the case, you believe that God created the earth and all that was put on it, including marijuana.  So why wouldn’t you want a natural medication created by the person who created you?  Cannabis won’t make people join in orgies or practice witchcraft.  People who want to do those things will do it with or without it.

People lose their minds

Some people believe that cannabis will make people do things that they shouldn’t like steal, rape, go on killing sprees, etc. They believe that it will alter and twist the mind of the person smoking it. That they will become evil, twisted, or lose their minds. Truth is millions of crimes are committed by people who have never touched cannabis. Does it have a psychoactive effect? Yes, but so does opioids and alcohol which 99% and of the people who tell me that they are against cannabis are totally okay with.  Cannabis actually brought clarity back into my life.  The physical pain I experienced from my chronic illnesses prior to medicating with cannabis, took over my mind.  I couldn’t think straight.  It would take hours to read and comprehend a few sentences or paragraphs.  I not only struggled with verbally expressing myself, I could barely write out my thoughts.  Yet, soon after I began medicating with marijuana my mind cleared, I could concentrate on what I was reading, comprehend what I had read, and most importantly my ability to express myself both verbally and through writing returned.  Opioids never had that effect.

Stoners are lazy

Some folks assume that people who use cannabis for recreational and/or medicinal purposes will become lazy.  Could someone abuse it and lose their job, home, spouse, etc.? Sure, but so could anyone who never touched marijuana.  The stoners in my circle are some of the most productive, active, and successful people you will ever meet.  They are creative and focused.  I don’t have the time to name the amount of people who have never touched cannabis yet are lazy, have no goals, and lack or have no desire to learn and/or develop their talents and skills.  Before medicating with cannabis I forced myself to leave the house to do something fun with my family a few times a year.  I would spend the months in between recovering.  After I began medicating I was able to start leaving the house several times a month, then every week, to now where I am busy every day of my life. Before cannabis I was in too much pain to do anything, now I am too busy to do everything that I want.

People will judge me

Honey, I have got news for you, people are always going to find a reason to judge you.  Do you allow what others think dictate how you treat your illnesses?  If so, why?  You have the right to medicate and treat your illnesses however you choose.  It is your body and your life.  Don’t let someone else’s closed mind keep you from doing what you want.  Last year a reader sent me a message saying how much cannabis had helped with her pain, but she had to stop using it because her family didn’t approve.  Seriously!!!!??!!!  She was denying herself from the pain relief that she knew was possible all because of what people who didn’t live with her pain thought about it??!!   You don’t have to proclaim yourself a stoner, there isn’t a club that you must pledge an oath to, nor will you have to wear a sign! Nobody has to know! Do you tell all of your family and friends about every medication you take, which includes Tylenol or allergy pills? If I didn’t blog about it, most of the people in my life wouldn’t have a clue that I medicate with cannabis.

I smoked a joint and it did nothing for me

You can’t judge whether or not cannabis will help with your chronic pain.  Unlike opioids, marijuana doesn’t mask pain.  The relief I have experienced has increased through the years, yet how much cannabis I need for pain management has decreased.  Another thing to consider is did you research and try a strain that is suited to your needs?  Every strain is different.  I am always researching strains to see what may be a good match for whatever symptom is bothering me the most.  Not everything that says it is good for a particular symptom is a match for me, it takes time to find a strain that performs the way I want it to.

I don’t want to get high

It is possible to medicate with cannabis and not get high.  Some people achieve an acceptable level of pain relief from CBD (one of the cannabinoids in the marijuana plant that doesn’t have a psychoactive effect), but as I have personally experienced, the addition of THC (a psychoactive cannabinoid) is what works best.  However, even with THC I was able to medicate and relieve my pain without getting high by micro-dosing.  Micro-dosing is consuming cannabis in small doses.  In fact I tell people to begin with micro-dosing so that they don’t get so high on their first try that they end up never wanting to  try it again.

I refuse to smoke

Well good for you…… Sorry to be rude, but this comment comes from people who have not taken the time to educate themselves about medicating with cannabis.  You can consume marijuana in various ways.  Cannabis is available in edible forms like candy, baked goods, butter, and beverages.  Tinctures are also great for micro-dosing as you just put a drop or two under your tongue.  Gel pills are also an option, but are hard to find in low dosages.  It is possible to medicate with cannabis and never smoke a day in your life.
This is just a handful of the excuses that people shared with me.  Have you tried it? If not, why?  If it because it has not been legalized in your area, I get it. I too once lived in a state where medicating with cannabis was not a legal option.  However, after experiencing so many improvements in the past 6 years, I suggest doing whatever it takes to get it.  I am not suggesting that you break the law, instead I am saying that if I didn’t live where it was legal, I would move or contact groups in my state/country that are actively working to get it legalized and join their efforts.
Is cannabis for everyone? No, but people need to stop saying that they have tried everything or that opioids are the only thing they can take for their pain without giving cannabis a chance.

Whether you smoke, vape, or chew it, nicotine is never good for your health. Nicotine can cause dangerous health issues with your lungs, heart, gastrointestinal system, and more. I was a smoker for most of my life. I began smoking when I was a teen and unsuccessfully tried to quit numerous times throughout my adult years. With my 50th birthday nearing I began evaluating everything I was doing for my health because I plan to live for another 54 years! While I have made great strides in cleaning up my diet and incorporating daily exercise into my life, I was still smoking cigarettes. Because of other health improvements, it became easy for me to notice the negative effects that smoking was having on my body. Then finally one morning I had had enough and said “NO MORE!”

I knew that if I really wanted to quit this time I would have to avoid methods I tried in the past. This meant that cutting back or going cold turkey wasn’t the answer. The trouble with cutting back is that as long as I knew I had cigarettes around, I would smoke them. Then I would buy another pack and lie to myself by saying I would only have one or two a day. In the past going cold turkey turned me into a raving lunatic. I would become so irritable and nasty that my family would actually beg me to smoke a cigarette!

Months prior to quitting for good, I had begun vaping medical marijuana and CBD. Until that point, I had been medicating with edibles, tinctures, or smoking it. I found comfort in vaping, it was like smoking but without the smell. It was also less time consuming and more affordable than smoking. A quick toke here and there and I was good to go. Vaping also satisfied another issue, I liked how it felt to hold a cigarette, inhale from it, and exhale smoke. I found vape pens that looked and felt like a cigarette. Recognizing that I would need to wean myself off of nicotine, I also purchased a few nicotine cartridges.

sooth cbd trav

Within the first few weeks, my craving for nicotine disappeared. However, my desire to smoke whenever I wanted to relax or if I felt anxious or stressed was strong. Not wanting to continue buying nicotine cartridges, I began taking one or two hits of CBD whenever the urge to buy and smoke a pack of smokes overtook me. Within seconds of exhaling a calmness would come over me and I no longer felt the need to smoke.

It has been three months since I quit. While not the first time I have attempted to quit, it will be my last. I only reach for my CBD cartridge when I need it, which believe it or not isn’t every day!! You may be wondering why if I had been using CBD for years wasn’t I able to quit smoking long ago. The reason is that I wasn’t listening to my body or recognizing why I was craving a cigarette. Now I know, I know when I need it to help me focus or to overcome a craving. Another difference is that by using a vape pen it is easy to keep with me and use at all times.

*Update:  It is now five months since I have quit.  This is the longest that I have ever gone without a cigarette.  Some days I have a puff or two from my CBD vape pen, but most of the time it is only for anxiety, not a desire to smoke.  I never imagined my life without a cigarette cradled between my fingers or hanging from my lips, but I am doing just fine without it…. It is so nice to no longer worry about offending people next to me with the odor or smoke, think about where I can smoke, or lose time working on projects because I was outside smoking….  The hardest part has been not smoking while talking on the phone.  Now instead of lighting up, I lace up! I put on my sneakers and walk while I talk…..

If you have failed to quit smoking, I highly suggest that you look into trying CBD to kick the habit.

How much do you know about CBD?

I am sure by now you have heard of CBD.  You may have heard how it has helped someone with their chronic pain, nausea, depression, anxiety, seizures, etc., but nothing from your doctors.  Your doctor may have never mentioned it or dismissed it when you asked about it. I and others who have benefitted from medicating with CBD, could talk until we were blue in the face about CBD and how it helped us and  you would still have unanswered questions.  So where does one turn to get those questions answered?

Thankfully my good friends at Green Flower Media have put together a guide to CBD.  Click here to learn more about CBD and its amazing health benefits.  Since not everyone has access to a medical marijuana dispensary where high quality CBD is usually sold, I am sharing my top three favorite CBD products that can be purchased online.

Bio CBD+

Bio CBD+ is one of my favorite CBD companies for several reasons.  The first is that their products work!! The second is that because they are so strong, stronger than other CBD products available online, a little goes a long way. I share more reasons in my product reviews.

Triniti CBD

Triniti CBD addresses an issue many have with CBD oils; the taste!!! Not everyone likes the taste of CBD oils, to be honest I couldn’t stand the taste when I began using them.  Over time I got used to it, but not everyone does.  For those who really want to utilize CBD for its amazing health benefits, but just can’t put one more awful tasting drop into their mouths, Triniti offers flavors!!

NuLeaf

Most CBD manufactures only offer their tinctures in one size.  Not NuLeaf!  They offer theirs in various sizes to fit your budget and needs.  I am in the process of writing a review for this awesome company and will insert it when it is done.  For now I will say this, it works wonderfully for anxiety and depression.  Same goes for their pet version! My anxious Chihuahua was calm and relaxed the last time my neighbors decided to set off fireworks!

CBD for Pets

It is no secret that I treat my pets the same as I do myself, with natural and alternative treatments.  I give my cats and dog CBD for various reasons.  My dog takes it for anxiety, one of our not so nice kitties takes it for anger issues, and our twenty-something and eighteen year old cats take it for chronic pain.

Make Pain Your Bitch: How to Dominate Your Chronic Life

book cover web

Make Pain Your Bitch

Has your chronic illness stolen the life you had?

Have you put your dreams on hold?

Does having to spend days, weeks, or months recovering from an outing make you feel like a prisoner in your own home/body?

Are you ready to make pain your bitch?

What are you waiting for?

In my eBook Make Pain Your Bitch: How to Dominate Your Chronic Life  I share the areas of my life that I needed to take ownership over and the changes that had to be made.  My book won’t cure you, but it will help you recognize what changes you need to make. Throughout the book I prompt you to examine your life, then I challenge you to make changes.

I haven’t been healed. Fibromyalgia, psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis, and endometriosis are NOT curable.  However, my daily pain continues to decrease, as does how often I flare, and the severity of my flares.  I have gone from leaving the house once or twice a month in a wheelchair and having to ride lying down in the back seat, because of pain that was so intense I couldn’t sit, stand, or walk for more than 5 minutes without wanting to pass out from it to living the life I live now.  What is that life?  I no longer need a wheelchair! I still use a walker for all day outings, but how often I need to use it continues to decrease.  I can drive myself anywhere I want!! I am no longer a prisoner of pain!! These improvements were unexpected.  They also weren’t necessary for me to begin living passionately and purposefully as I began thriving long before I regained my physical independence and you can too!

Chronic illnesses are not death sentences.  There is hope and it is possible to live a fulfilling and pleasurable life with less pain.  I began winning my battle with chronic pain six years ago and continue to improve. With that said, all of my physical improvements could disappear tomorrow and I would still love my life.  Why? Because I have learned to live passionately and purposefully no matter what my body throws at me.  I have learned to work with my diseases, instead of constantly battling them.

Do you want to dominate your chronic life?

surviving a heatwave blog post social fbtw

Thanks to my numerous alternative and natural treatments, I’ve been able to decrease and eliminate many flare-ups and daily symptoms that I have experienced from fibromyalgia and psoriatic arthritis.  This year I can add less downtime due to excessive heat and heatwaves to that list!! In fact despite a triple digit heatwave heading towards southern California, I was still able to go to Disneyland to celebrate Independence Day with my family.

Burnout

Until last year summer, excessive heat and heatwaves were responsible for triggering fibromyalgia and psoriatic arthritis flares that left me in bed for most of the summer instead of going to the beach or Disneyland.  Most days were spent lying in my bed or recliner praying for the pain to end.  Living in Arizona was the worst, because there wasn’t just an occasional heatwave, the entire summer was considered extreme heat. I rarely left the house during the summer and when I did, I was miserable. Living in California is so much better.  In fact, I experienced the difference long before I made changes to how I treated my chronic illnesses.  Triple digits are not common here and my body and I fell in love with the summer weather.  Although I was still getting knocked down from heatwaves, my body wasn’t being punished by the weather on a daily basis.

How excessive heat affected me

Excessive heat and heatwaves would completely knock me down.  I would experience extreme muscle and mental fatigue, joint/bone pain, muscle/joint inflammation,  increased nerve pain, swelling around my spine which would then shoot nerve pain not only down my legs but up through my neck and skull too. I would also experience inflammation around my skull. I would struggle to open my eyes and speak coherently. Forget sitting up, my entire world would spin out of control each time I tried.

These symptoms would often start as early as 3 days prior to the heatwave hitting or anywhere from 2 to 24 hours before. These flares would last until the pressure pushing in the heat began to decline. Depending on how long it took for the pressure to decrease, I would be knocked down for 2 to 5 days. There were times when I would be lucky to have one or two good days a month during the summer season. When living where my summer temperatures were considered extreme heat for over 3 months I was basically down that entire time.  I felt like my skin was on fire and as though it and my muscles were being pulled from my bones.  Imagine how it would feel to have someone take a screwdriver and attempt to pry them open, that is the pain that I was told I would never be able to escape.

How changing my treatment plan brought back my love of summer

In the past 6 years, since I began treating my conditions naturally and alternatively, the amount of time I spend in bed continues to decrease. In fact, in the past year the amount of time I have lost to a heatwave can be accounted for on one hand. Instead of losing a complete day though, I only lose portions.  I experience the symptoms in smaller degrees. For example the fatigue that used to plague me 24/7 throughout a heatwave, now only requires that I take a nap or two and/or that maybe I sleep in an hour or two later than normal and or go to bed an hour or two more than I prefer.  I am no longer tortured by uncontrollable nerve pain. My muscle/joint pain is minimal compared to what I used to deal with as I can still function for a good portion of the day without dealing with pain that used to bring tears to my eyes. Another perk is that I don’t have to medicate myself into a mental stupor to get that pain level down.

How I’m winning the battle

To begin winning I had to take ownership over my healthcare and accept that I, not my doctor is responsible for my health.  He/she can suggest and prescribe things, but I have the final say over what goes in and on my body.  Since what I had done for twelve years failed to help me it was time to make some changes.  Click here to find out what changes I made and click here to discover which symptoms I addressed first.  This is why I have been able to decrease the severity of my flares and symptoms in all realms, not just with heat waves. Now when I feel a heatwave, yes I  feel them and often way before the weatherman predicts them, I address my symptoms immediately. The moment I feel swelling in my hips and sacrum, I alternate icing the areas, running pemf treatments, and applying a topical CBD oil. The same goes for when I feel any pressure or inflammation  around my spine and neck. By keeping those areas happy and keeping the pressure, swelling, and pain from getting out of control is what has been helping me. I also try to see my chiropractor, because an adjustment also helps relieve some of the pressure around my spine that I’m unable to relieve myself. Throughout the day I need nothing besides ice my Oska Pulse and a topical CBD oil to get through the day.  I will smoke or vape medical marijuana before bed or a little earlier depending on  how drastically I was able to decrease the swelling and keep it under control. But this is nothing new as I have a little medical marijuana before bed every night to help with insomnia. Click here to find out all the different ways that PEMF therapy has been improving my life since November of 2016.

The gift that keeps on giving

My pain management plan is the gift that keeps on giving.  With each passing year and new addition or tweak to my plan,  my pain and severity of my chronic illnesses decreases and my life improves. Because of my winning combination I was able to go out yesterday,  even though we are expecting triple digits tomorrow! It is why I am able to work today instead of spending my entire day in bed.   I began feeling the symptoms from this impending heatwave on Sunday. That is also when I began addressing the symptoms.  I didn’t wait and allow them to get out of control, I addressed them immediately.  Because the methods  I use are effective for my body, I was able to celebrate the 4th of July with family at Disneyland.  It was the best Independence Day that I have had since being diagnosed with fibromyalgia and psoriatic arthritis in 2003.

What about you?

Did you get to celebrate the 4th with family or friends or were you home alone in bed praying for the pain to end?  Look back at your past year. How many social engagements did you have to cancel?  How many holidays did you have to stay home while your family went out? Does your chronic pain ruin plans and/or holidays for your spouse and children? Have you made changes to how you treat your chronic pain and the symptoms from your chronic illnesses that limit how much you are physically able to do? If not, why not? There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all pain management plan for any chronic illness including fibromyalgia and psoriatic arthritis. I am not saying that my plan is the best or even that it is the plan for you, I do however invite you to look at it to see if there isn’t something in my plan that could help you. I know you don’t enjoy having to cancel plans or spend the holidays in bed.  I know that because that was once me and I hated it.

If you are winning the Battle of excessive heat and your chronic illnesses I’d love to hear how you’re doing it. Be sure to share in the comments what you use, what you do, and how you are reclaiming your life. And as always if you have any questions about how I manage my chronic illnesses and my chronic pain and how I am winning my battle with them please ask.
