Three Ways to Prevent an Anxiety Attack During the Holidays

If you’re like me and suffer from anxiety the holidays can be a pretty stressful time of year. Here’s a few tips to avoid stress this holiday season.

1. Avoid drama

Be choosy about who you spend your time with. Some people are just too fixated on drama and it can increase anxiety, it increases mine to a terrible extent. Spend time with people you know you can have fun with and won’t put too much stress on you. Friends who really want to hang out with you won’t make it stressful, they won’t care if you’ll go out for dinner or eat pizza while watching Christmas Vacation for the 50th time. All they should care about is having fun with you, not the stupid crap Kathy said 2 years ago.

2. Avoid crowds

Now, personally crowds are a mix for me. Sometimes they don’t get to me, sometimes they stress me out so badly that I feel like vomiting. If you’re at all like that, then I suggest Christmas shopping online. Some stores are just to small and then having tons of people going shopping in these small areas is just too much. Shopping online is an easier,  stress free way to Christmas shop. Especially if you have that one kid who only wants stuff from Hot Topic, those stores are always too small, at least they are in California. Amazon is great for Christmas shopping, just sit in bed and press add to cart. Don’t need to fight anyone over a toy on Amazon.

3. Don’t procrastinate

Now, I’m terribly at this. I procrastinate a lot, I even procrastinated writing  this post. Which I don’t suggest doing. Procrastinating can lead to a lot of stress and anxiety, so try you’re best to get it done as soon as possible, even if it’s just a few presents a day. It will make it a lot easier and a lot less stressful when you’ve got all the presents ready and don’t have to wait for the Amazon delivery guy to deliver it 2 days before Christmas.

I hope these tips can help you have a less stressful holiday season, it’s not a lot but these can make a big difference.

Four Things You Don’t Know About Me

Four Things You Don’t Know About Me

Now, I figured that I should probably take a break from yelling “comfortable” and actually tell you guys a bit about me, you know aside what you already know from my bio. So, buckle up because you’re about to hear how nerdy I really am.

Wall-e

1. I really love robots, I mean REALLY love robots.

Now, I’ve always loved robots. I think Star Wars had a big part of starting this weird obsession of mine. I mean I absolutely LOVED R2-D2 as a kid but as I got older I realized it was more than just “Oh hey that’s a cute robot!”  It’s now more “Can robots feel human emotions?” I think the movie that finally made me realize that I was going to obsess over robots and their existence for the rest of my life was Ex Machina. It’s an amazing movie with great acting, a wonderful soundtrack, great cinematography, and a wonderful look at robots. Honestly, I highly recommend this movie if you’re a lover of robots and/or just a film nerd. Which leads me into another thing.

Film

2. I’m a giant film nerd.

I love movies. I love that they can transport you into another world, it’s such a great way of storytelling and it’s a shame that there’s so many movies that don’t utilize its great potential. Another one of my favorite movies that recently came out perfectly shows just how amazing and transporting a movie can be and that has to be Blade Runner 2049.  I just saw this yesterday and honestly, I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s one of the few times I’ve walked out of a movie theater and thought “I absolutely love this movie.” It’s beautiful. The story is great, the acting is fantastic, the soundtrack and sound design is amazing, and not to mention that the cinematography is just absolutely gorgeous. It’s one of those films that just make me go “I want to make a movie.”

3. I absolutely love synth/EDM.

Now I should mention, I’ve never been able to pin point what I exactly like in music. Everyone always asks me what genre of music I like and I always reply with “I like what I like.” Because honestly I don’t really like just one genre or any genre in its entirety. I mean, I enjoy Pop, Metal, EDM, Synth, Hardrock and whatever else there is. Except country. I’ve never been able get into country music. So, when I discovered I loved Synth/EDM it was really great and really confusing because there’s so many synth/EDM bands that I like that don’t just use synth/EDM. Like Pylot (one of my favorite musical artist’s), it’s EDM with some slight rock elements with kinda a story somewhere in there. Of course, I’ve always been terrible at describing bands and music. So just make sure you never get into a conversation about music with me or I’ll become an incoherent mess.

4. I love Cyberpunk.

Now, after everything I’ve said about loving robots, EDM and Blade Runner, I think this should pretty be obvious. It’s just cool. I really don’t know how to describe why I like it other then “it’s just cool.”

Now, I could probably go on and on about the weird nerdy things I like but I’m starting to realize that Halloween candy doesn’t make a great breakfast.

But anyways, now that you’ve learned a bit more about me, why don’t you tell me a little bit about you.

Finding a Chronically Comfortable Halloween Costume

Finding a Chronically Comfortable Halloween Costume

abby october 2.jpg

Now I love fall, I love all the shades of orange and yellow, I love that I can still wear a tank top but only need a light jacket, I love that I can wear weird skull clothes and not get any weird looks. I just love fall, especially Halloween. But I also kind of hate Halloween. Now you must be thinking “But Abi! You just said you loved it!” and you’re right. I love the concept of dressing up and getting candy, I love watching good horror movies (even though I’m a scaredy cat.), I love just sitting in my room eating candy and watching The Nightmare Before Christmas for the 900th time. But, what I don’t like, is how uncomfortable so many costumes are and how much they make me nervous.

walmart halloween.jpg

I’ve had many Halloween’s where I was always somewhat uncomfortable in my costume. And it was never for the same reasons. Some just felt generally uncomfortable, some were itchy, some were too tight, some just made me uncomfortable because it showed to much skin. Whether it was physical or mental, I’ve always been uncomfortable in my costumes. But not this year, this year I plan to have the most simple, adorable and comfy costume of my life. And that costume is literally just a onesie.

Now some of you might be thinking “But that’s not really a costume.” To that I must say, I do not care. A onesie is everything I wanted out of all my Halloween costumes. It’s comfortable, it’s cute, it doesn’t make me feel itchy and I don’t feel like I’m showing to much because it’s literally just a onesie, no one’s going to see anything unnecessary. Although, there are probably some weirdos who have one that does but let’s just imagine that it doesn’t exist.

Abi’s owl onesie was purchased from Wal-Mart. Click here to see more!

So finally, I will have a Halloween where I can eat candy and watch Black Mirror in comfort.
What costumes have made you uncomfortable in the past and what did you do to change it?

Why the Nintendo Switch is a perfect console for chronic gamers

Why the Nintendo Switch is a perfect console for chronic gamers

The Nintendo Switch was released about 7 months ago and even though I love Nintendo, I haven’t gotten one yet. That’s mostly because of how horrible the restocks are, but that’s another conversation for another time. But, one of the reasons I want one is how perfect it is for me and my chronic pain. A while back I played it at my friend’s house and it made me realized how perfect it was for me. And now I’ll give you my reasons why I think the Nintendo Switch is perfect for chronic gamers.

abby switch 1
Do you ever get uncomfortable while sitting in your chair playing video games on your computer? Does sitting in front of the TV and holding the controller start bothering you? Those are some of my biggest problems when it comes to gaming. I’m never fully comfortable. Another problem is, when I am having a pain bad day and sitting in my chair isn’t comfortable, so I like to lay in bed and play games. Sadly, using my laptop is complicated when lying in bed. I usually place my laptop on me, then grab a few notebooks for my mouse. Now that doesn’t sound so bad, until you have to get up to use the bathroom. Then you realize you’ve trapped yourself under your laptop. Lately when I’m having those bad days though, I’ve been using my 3DS. But sadly again, I still have a problem with that. I luckily don’t get trapped under my 3DS, but my shoulders and hands get uncomfortable and trying to hold it while lying on my side isn’t very easy. Now, here’s where the Switch comes in. When having a bad day and I need to just lie in bed, I could easily take the Switch out of its dock, take the controllers off the tablet and just make a little stand for the tablet. Best part, my hands and shoulders wouldn’t hurt like they would with the 3DS. Why? Because, as I already stated, you can take each controller off the tablet and have them completely disconnected from each other. So I could have each arm resting my each of my sides and not put strain on my shoulders or hands.

abby switch 2

Another great thing is just how darn comfortable those controllers are. When I first saw pictures of them, I thought they would feel horrible and weird, since they’re pretty much flat, but after using them I realized just how comfortable they are. I usually prefer controllers for most games, unless it’s a first person shooter. But you know that part of the controller that’s kind of round so you can hold them? Turns out that strains my hands more, so flat is actually better for me. And as I already stated, the controllers aren’t connected, so it makes it easier to be able to have a more relaxing and comfortable experience.
Another thing that’s nice is that,  I wouldn’t have to always use the monitor for the Switch. The Switch has a dock that connects to a TV or monitor with an HDMI cable. So, you can play the games on a bigger screen, but as I said earlier you can just easily take it out and lay on bed with it. Heck, you can even take it to the store with you, just don’t lose it in the produce aisle.

abby switch 3.png

Now, you’re probably sick of how many times I’ve said comfortable in this post, but honestly it’s the most comfortable console I have used in a long time. I’m hoping to get one for Christmas so I can really test out just how comfortable it is, and I want to test out on car trips. Anyways, I hope some of you will be convinced to get this wonderfully little console and enjoy how cozy it is…. See I can use another word other than comfortable.

Anyways, what makes you uncomfortable while gaming and how have you worked around it?

Prepping For My First Tattoo

Prepping For My First Tattoo

By Abigail

abby tattoo pic

I plan to get my first two tattoos early next year. I’ve wanted to do this for a very long time. I’ve known a lot of people with them and I’ve always loved how they’ve looked. But beyond how awesome they look, I’ve always loved people’s stories about them.
The first one I want is a small red heart and under it I want it to say “You are filled with determination.” It’s from one of my favorite games, Undertale. It’s a nice but sweet reminder to always get up and do what you love. The second one I want to put on the back of my neck and I have it  say “We Have Control”.  Anyone familiar with The Protomen will know that’s from the chant in The Will of One. It’s quite weird for me, since the chant is pretty much the crowd cheering on Mega Man while he’s off trying to take down Wily. I have 2 meanings for this tattoo; 1. it’s a badass reference to The Protomen. 2. it’s a reminder that we have control of our lives and that only we can decided what’s best for us.

TattooBalm_001
I currently have a few places in mind, but one big thing I did want to look up before I searched artists was whether or not red dye is used in the ink. I don’t believe I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m horribly allergic to red dye. Luckily I found out that the ink is different from the dye they use in food and soap, it’s actually metal. I have a question for anyone with tattoos and a chronic illness, what was you’re experience with the pain? I don’t know if there will be a big difference or not with having chronic pain, but I’m pretty bad with pain. So I’d like to know if any weird pain I’m experiencing is either chronic or me being wimpy. Also, do you have any recommendations for tattoo healing? Is there any soap and/or balm that make a difference? I’d love to know.

Why Exercise is Important for My Body

Why Exercise is Important for My Body

By Abigail

abigailexercise

Let’s face it, not a lot of people enjoy working out. I don’t fully enjoy it either. It’s one of those things where people are either “Oh yeah I love working out! I run up 15 mountains a day!” or “Working out? HAHAHA, wait your serious? Yeah no I hate it with every fiber in my being.” One of the most annoying things to go through is when you tell someone you work out and they immediately assume 1 outta 2 things. 1. You’re now a crazy nut who enjoys running across states. Or 2. You’re making it up to seem like you didn’t eat entire pizza by yourself. Now you should be thinking “Those are really stupid.” And you’re right. Don’t get me wrong, there’s probably people who do those things, but it’s not fair to immediately assume these things.

starwarsad

I personally don’t fully enjoy working out, BUT I do like what it does for my body. After working out for a while, I’ve noticed changes that I wouldn’t have if I just continued to lay in bed and play Animal Crossing. I’ve noticed how much it helps with my balance, strength, pain tolerance and many more things. One thing I noticed in particular, which has also been my favorite thing is that I have more energy. I can actually wake up in the morning and not immediately feel tired or exhausted. I’ve been able to hang out at a friend’s house and not want to collapse. I can go to Disneyland and not be sad that I’m already exhausted from walking from our car to Space Mountain.

video-games-banner.jpg

Yeah, losing weight and being able to carry a case of water into the house is nice, but it’s genuinely nice to be able to do so many things and not have my body screaming at me. Yeah, actually working out may not be fun, but you should think about how it will affect your body and how it can improve your life BEFORE you think about how “unfun” it can be. Also, please don’t push yourself when working out. Make sure you find something that works for you, and heck even if you only do yoga for 5 minutes that’s great because you’re at least doing something to improve your body and life.

What’s your favorite physical improvement from working out?

Sickness and Shoverly

Sickness and Shoverly

By Abigail

Disclaimer: I honestly have no idea if Shovelry is a word or not. They used it in the game and I thought it would make a good title.. ANYWAYS let’s get on with this.

Last Saturday I woke up with what felt like one of the worst colds ever, but as the day went on it got much better which led me to believe I would be okay on Sunday. But nope! I woke up with my throat hurting horribly and feeling like I needed to vomit. Luckily I did not vomit. I spent most of that day laying in bed and playing one of my favorite games, Shovel Knight. Now usually when I’m horribly sick I play games that are more relaxing and don’t require much muscle memory or a fully functional brain, games like Ace Attorney or Animal Crossing are usually what I play when I’m that sick. But for once, I changed it up and played Shovel Knight, for about almost 6 hours. Now, as I already stated, I don’t usually play anything to extreme while sick and I’m not saying Shovel Knight is extremely hard but I do often have to control myself from throwing my 3DS across the room when I play it.

Now, what lead me to play this game while being so sick? Was it that I finally wanted to finish Specter Of Torment? Maybe I wanted to finally collect all those darn music sheets. Or maybe I just wanted to see Mona’s cute dance again.

Well, Honestly all the above. I did end up finishing Specter Knight’s campaign and collecting all the red skulls. I did in fact get to see Mona’s cute dance. But sadly I didn’t collect all the music sheets, I’m still working on it though. I think one of the things that draws me to Shovel Knight is that, even though the entire land has been taken over by The Enchantress and her Order Of No Quarter and Shield Knight being taken away, there seems like not much can be done to stop them, But you, Shovel Knight are brave enough to defeat them and save Shield Knight. I mean, there’s also the Troupple King and who doesn’t love a king of fish and fruit?

What I just said kinda sounds like your average video game, defeat the bad guys! Save that random lady you’ve only seen on screen for less than five minutes! But in all honestly, what makes Shovel Knight great is that, no matter what’s going on in my life, I can play it and always have this sense of wonderment and happiness. I guess what I’m trying to get at is, Shovel Knight is an adorable game with fun characters and even though sometimes it can get hard, it’s still rewarding and just so darn adorable. And somehow, even though I was super sick and felt super horrible, Shovel Knight was there for me. Now if you don’t mind, I have some darn  music sheets to find.
What’s your favorite game to play when you’re sick or flaring?
