What do marijuana, melatonin, and Captain Kirk have in common? Well sit back and let me tell you a bedtime story……..
Once upon a time there was a girl that never had troubles sleeping. The only thing that could prevent her from falling asleep was noise. No TV, no music, she needed a quiet room. She married her Prince soon after he proposed and wouldn’t you know he needed NOISE!
Thankfully her Prince had a traveling job. Sleeping in the same bed became tricky as he couldn’t fall asleep with the TV on. So the Princess would wait until he was sound asleep before she would turn off the TV and then slip into bed. Soon after it wasn’t just the TV that was keeping her awake, pain in every joint and muscle were making sleep something she could only day dream about.
After many years of trying one pill after another, and every and any suggestion she heard or read about how to make yourself sleepy, she gave up. Nothing worked. She would go days and sometimes weeks only sleeping for 20 minute intervals a few times a day. Once her body reached the point of total exhaustion she would sleep for a day or two. She thought she was going to lose her mind. That is until she tried something her doctors wouldn’t prescribe. So without her primary care doctor’s approval she joined the ever growing group of people that treat their pain and conditions with marijuana.
She slept almost every night. The only reason she wouldn’t was if she didn’t medicate strongly enough or ran out of medication. Which is amazing because by this time the Prince was rarely traveling for work. This is still true today. Some nights her mind would race and race and race, preventing her from sleeping soundly. But that ended when she began adding melatonin to her nightly medicinal arsenal. Once asleep her mind and body get the break they desperately need even when the Prince has his TV on.
Then one night she noticed that for an entire week she had been rummaging through the refrigerator in the middle of the night. Now we all know that with marijuana comes the munchies, but it hadn’t been an issue until now. As she crept back to bed she realized what was happening. The show her husband had playing was one that they would watch while eating dinner!!! They tested her theory by switching what he played each night. Sure enough the shows that they had watched while eating were the ones to trigger her late night snack attacks. So our Princess banned the Prince from playing those shows at bed time. But there was still a problem. If the Prince played a show or movie that she wasn’t familiar with she would drive herself crazy trying to figure out the storyline. Some shows just annoyed her. Then one night she found herself not only falling asleep quickly but staying asleep. There was something or should I say someone that she found soothing. They tested this show for a few weeks and discovered that listening to the original Star Trek series was the trick to allowing both our Prince and Princess to get a good night’s sleep. The Princess finds Captain Kirk and Spock’s voices to be calming and soothing, just like a lullaby.
And that my friend is what marijuana, melatonin, and Captain Kirk have in common. Three things that when put together create the best lullaby ever! Have you found your lullaby?
Hoping you days are filled with gentle hugs and your nights with zzzzzzzzz’s,
