This is one of those times when I am unable to blame anything or anyone for my extra pain. This flare is totally my fault but totally worth it. You see months ago we had planned on spending Halloween day at Disneyland as a family. This means my husband drives and I get to medicate throughout my day as needed. There is one other thing in our life that is as unpredictable as my conditions and that is my husband’s job. Early in the week we learned that my husband would be out of town for work and the only way that Halloween at Disneyland was going to happen was for me to take our daughter myself. Without my husband, I would be the one who would have to drive. This also meant that I would not be able to medicate.
I tried not to stress about this outing that is until Wednesday when nerve pain in my lower back and left leg hit an all time high. By Thursday afternoon the nerve pain had lowered and fatigue took its place. Thankfully I woke up feeling pretty good on Friday. A little achy, but not so bad that I felt like I needed to stay home.
Because we (my daughter and I) wanted to see Anna and Elsa, we knew we had to get to the park early. Living approximately an hour away I knew I would have to leave earlier than normal because of traffic. It took 2 hours to drive to Disneyland. We were able to seen Anna and Elsa, many other characters, go on many tame rides, and I was able to enjoy two fast rides. I was amazed at that my body was allowing me to have so much fun!! Because we needed to be back home for an event that my daughter had planned to attend that evening we left the parks at 3PM. It took a total of 3 hours to drive home thanks to traffic and accidents! It was an amazing day, one that made history for my family….. you see every time we are at Disneyland someone always lands in my lap, runs into me, or we hit someone with my wheelchair….Not this time!!! We had a few close calls, but never hit anyone nor did anyone run into me.!!!! Just so you know, my family and I are extremely careful with my wheelchair and the percentage of run ins that are caused by us is only 10%. My daughter was a rock star for how well she pushed me around without complaining.
It wasn’t until we were on our ride home that I could feel my pain escalating. I could feel all my joints swelling as well as the muscles around my spine. I was never so happy to get home and into bed.
I drove for a total of 5 hours on Friday!! That is the most I have driven in several years. This weekend I was reminded of why. My body is in so much pain, even my hair hurts!!! There isn’t a part of my body inside or out that doesn’t hate me today. But I do not regret the moments had or the memories made with my daughter for one second. This was one of those times when I don’t mind the pain. I have a few weeks before a family member joins us for a few jam packed fun days at Disneyland, so for now I will obey my body’s wishes and give it what it needs. When pain follows a fantastic outing or follows a project that I really wanted to do, it is so much easier to accept. It is when it strikes fiercely for no reason that frustrates me.
What was the last thing you did that sparked a flare, but that you didn’t mind because you enjoyed it?
Hoping everyone has a little less pain this week!
